Cycling between islands
Experience a little more
It is easy to discover the islands of Vaxholm by bike. With the car ferry you can quickly reach both Rindö and Skarpö. Cycle through the center of Vaxholm and over the bridge and you will soon arrive at Engarn and Resarö. Here are some suggestions for routes with nice stops along the way. Which one suits you?
Rindö and Skarpö
The yellow road ferry in Västerhamnen takes you and your bike across the strait to Rindö. Follow the cycle path and cycle across the island to the eastern side. Here at Oxdjupet, in the former barracks area, you will find Rindö Hamn with several food craftsmen and the restaurant Syrran & Jag. After a stop you are ready to continue along Oxdjupet. You pass the old fort Oscar Fredriksborg, and on the other side of the strait you see Fredriksborg Fortress where there is now also a hotel and restaurant. Continue to Rindö old village and follow the gravel road and bike path back to the ferry dock.
If you want to continue to Skarpö, turn right when you reach the ferry terminal and cycle along the water and over the small bridge. Here the houses are colorful and the terrain is hilly. Don't miss cycling down to the jetty at Skarpöborg where you can enjoy the boating life and the view of the beautiful old houses at Stegesund.
Vaxön, Engarn & Resarö
Hop on your bike at the harbor in Vaxholm and head for the first stop: Engarn. Engarn's village is small and picturesque, with beautiful archipelago houses, allotment area and sheep grazing. Here at Engarn is also Skärgårdens kanotcenter if you want to combine the bike ride with a canoeing trip or a moment in the wood-fired sauna.
After a short break, you cycle on to Killingeskogen - a beautiful forest peninsula with conifers, marshes, military historical remains and cliffs down to the sea. In the recreation area, you can make your way on paths and wider trails.
You are now not far from Överbybadet. If you want to take a dip, follow the long straight stretch, past the football pitch and the horse paddocks, before turning left towards the baths.
Resarö is also home to Ytterby mine, a unique historical site that has become world-famous as seven elements have been discovered there. Park your bike and take the stairs up to the mine. From there you have a fabulous view of the bay and the islands.
The herring run
Strömmingsrundan, starting at Lägret in Vaxholm has two routes - 5 km and 10 km. The shorter of the two also works well by bike.
