The islands of Vaxholm
Vaxholm is not one island, but 70 islands, 57 of which are inhabited. Some of them can be reached by bridge or car ferry, others only by boat. Here is a brief presentation of some of them
Which island will be your favorite?
-
Rindö and Oxdjupet
Nature and military history meet on Rindö. The former barracks area at Oxdjupet is now housing. This is also where you will find a restaurant Syrran & Jagand several of Vaxholm's food craftsmen. You can easily get to Rindö with the yellow road ferry from Vaxholm. Feel free to bring a bike and you will easily get around the island.
-
Vaxholmen with Kastellet
Midway between Vaxön and Rindö is Vaxholmen island, which is best known for housing Vaxholms Kastell - the fortress that would defend Stockholm against unwelcome guests from the sea. At Kastellet there are today Vaxholms FÀstnings Museum conference facilities, activities and a restaurant for booked groups.
-
Arches Sound
Bogesund is not really an island, but part of the mainland. But surrounded by water on three sides, it's easy to forget that. Here you can hike on miles of paths along beaches, hardwood forests and oak hills to places with traces of the time when the Vikings Gunne and Ă sa lived here.
-
Eriksö
Eriksö used to be an island in its own right, but has long since grown together with the western part of Vaxön. Here you will find camping, jogging tracks, a beach and the Skypark adventure park, where you can make your way high up among the treetops.
-
Kullön
Kullön is named after the farm Norrkulla, which for four hundred years was an active farm. The western parts of the island have been a nature reserve since 2005 with beautiful paths. The easiest way to get here is by bike or bus 670 from Vaxholm.
-
Resarö and Engarn
Engarn and Resarö were already inhabited in Viking times. At that time they were two separate islands, but have now grown together into one. Here you can walk through Engarn's old village and visit the beautiful colony area. Engarn also has SkÀrgÄrdens kanotcenter, for those who like to paddle and sauna. Don't miss Ytterby mine, the place where historically many elements have been found.
