Art exhibition - Maritta Wahren

The fact that artist Maritta Wahren has lived in France for many years is reflected in the lively, colorful paintings for which she has become so appreciated over the years.

In her paintings, she portrays crowds, glamor and joy in a detailed and whimsical way, allowing even the most attentive eye to find something to linger on and delight in.

Maritta, born in 1939, moved with her husband Carl "Charlie" Wahren to Paris in 1987 where they lived for 10 years. She was fascinated by the light of Paris, its architecture and its crowds. After Charlie's retirement, they moved to Gattères, in the south of France, living alternately in Täby and Provence. The Provençal light, the strong sun, the tourists, the dancing and the café life influenced the painting and the color scale changed from Paris earth tones to Provence pastels.

She has said of her painting: "When you paint, you get in touch with your subconscious in a way you wouldn't otherwise. Each painting is an exciting journey into my mind and brings me new discoveries every time."

In the fall of 2003, she suffered a stroke that paralyzed her right arm and she continued to paint with her left hand until her death in winter 2021.

During her successful career she has had a number of exhibitions, mostly in Paris but also in Gattiéres and Sweden. Maritta was asked to make the poster for the Marriage of Figaro at the Gattières Opera Festival in 1991 and a number of her paintings illustrate the book "The French Riviera Code", (KnowWare publications 2005).

The exhibition at Roddarhuset is a warm and playful celebration of Maritta and Carl's loving life together.
